Product details Dissent in Earnest
Dissent in Earnest
'Dissent in Earnest', 1860. 'We Defer to their Feelings, but we cannot Assent to their Reasoning - Parl Debate'. This cartoon depicts either Lord Palmerston, the Liberal Prime Minister, or Gladstone, Palmerston's Chancellor of the Exchequer, being harangued by Mr John Bright, the Quaker MP. This relates to the proposed Census Bill which would require the forthcoming census papers to be completed with the religious profession of the person signing the paper. The dissenters, lead by John Bright, immediate raised a violent protest. Palmerston, however, had said that he would certainly adhere to this requirement. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 21, 1860.
