Double-branded crow butterfly

Frederic C Moore

Entomological studies of a butterfly and a caterpillar.

Figures 1 and 2 are male and female Euploea sylvester, or double-branded crow butterflies, referred to here as Narmada montana. Their upperside is rich brown, as are their forewings, with a marginal row of white spots on their hindwings.

Figure 2a depicts the larval stage of the double- branded crow. It is pale pink with deep pink bands and black and red spots. Shown side on, the caterpillar is depicted as if crawling along a leaf. The pupa, hanging left as viewed, is yellow.

Plate 6 from The Lepidoptera of Ceylon, by Frederic Moore, vol. 1 (1880-1881). Frederic Moore (1830-1907) British entomologist was not a Fellow of the Royal Society. Moore's son, Frederic C Moore, illustrated this volume.
