'Great Sciatic nerve'

Leonard

Medical study of a section of the amputated leg tissue of Elizabeth Powis, showing the human sciatic nerve. Plate 2 from the publication A memoir on amputation of the thigh at the hip joint, (with a successful case) by William Sands Cox FRS (London, 1845). Elizabeth Powis, a 23-year old (in 1845) seamstress, underwent surgery at the Queen's Hospital, Birmingham, England on 1 November 1842. The text accompanying this illustration notes that: 'On making a section of the diseased mass...The nerves terminated in bulbous enlargements: that of the great sciatic nerve was as large as a walnut, greyish, solid, and vascular...The accompanying drawing, most carefully taken the following day by Mr.R.W.Bradley, Student of Queen's College, will give a clearer idea than any verbal description. Inscribed below: 'A. Great Sciatic nerve.' The inscription for plate's authorship has been trimmed off in binding, the upper edge just visible.

Original: lithograph . 1845
