Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn Observed by Queen Catherine, 1870

Marcus Stone

Painting by Marcus Stone (1840-1921), British history painter. Anne has been playing the lute for the king watched by a gathering of courtiers. The Queen, Catherine of Aragon, looks in on the scene from the doorway, while her portrait, hanging on wall behind Henry and Anne also 'observes' the goings on. Cardinal Wolsey, right of centre, looks on. The little dog, traditionally symbolising fidelity, is an ironic touch. From a private collection.
