Two surgical studies showing front and back views of the bladder of a Mr.Gardiner, the subject of an autopsy by Edward Nourse following Gardiner's death on 2 January 1742. The illustration shows seven of the nine stones found within six apertures in the man's bladder tissue. Plate 1 figures 1-2 from 'A letter...giving an account of several stones found in bags formed by a protrusion of the coats of the bladder, as appeared upon opening the body of one Mr.Gardiner', by Edward Nourse, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol. 42 1742-1743, pp.11-14. Inscribed lower left: 'Eliz. Blackwell, delin et sculp.' Endorsed verso: 'Jan. 7 1741/2'. Edward Nourse (bap.1701-1761) surgeon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1728.
