Master Bull and his Dentist

Anonymous

'Master Bull and his Dentist', 1861. Master Bull sits in the dentist's chair crying, while being handed a coin by the dentist. The dentist consoles him by saying Don't cry, my little man! I'm not going to draw any more this time, and there's a penny for you! A concerned woman stares at the dentist. John Bull, the child in the dentist's chair, is the British worker being given a reduction of 1d in the pound from Mr Gladstone's recent Budget. This reduced the rate from 10d to 9d. There is a label with the words Income Tax on it attached to what looks like a contemporary dental device, possibly used for extractions. This would accord with the notice on the wall in the background, showing the price of extractions in 1860. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 27, 1861.
