Portrait of Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll (1629-1685)
Half length wearing a dark coat, white collar and black cap. Inscribed: "Archibald Campbell Ninth Earl of Argyll, From the original in the Collection of His Grace the Duke of Argyll. Drawn by Wm. Derby, and Engraved (with Permission) by W.Freeman". Inscribed in pencil lower right "Elected 1663 Executed 1685". This print most closely resembles a different individual: an original portrait of Archibald Campbell, Marquess of Argyll (1605/7-1661) by David Scougall (active 1654-1677) Scottish painter. Archibald Campbell 9th Earl of Argyll was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663.
