Geikie has long white side-whiskers and holds metal-rimmed spectacles in his right hand, the left resting on his thigh. Behind, a fossilised bone is visible at the sitter's right shoulder with others painted more obscurely to the right as viewed. Archibald Geikie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1865, he served as its President from 1908 to 1913.
