Half length portrait of the Moroccan ambassador to the court of Charles II in London. Haddu is shown seated, in Arabic dress and bearded, with a sword cradled loosely across his lap. Behind is an architectural pillar with an inscription within a floral border: 'His Excellency Hamet ben Hamet Ben Haddu Ottom Ambassador Extraordinar from the Emperor of Morocco to his Majesty of Great Brittainne in the Yeare 1682.' This inscription is repeated and expanded below: 'Painted by Suo Pere Rosse. Engraved by M.Tomkins, pupil of F.W.Tomkins. His Excellency HAMET BEN HAMET BEN HADDII, OTTOMAN AMBASSADOR EXTRAORDINARY from the EMPEROR of MOROCCO to his MAJESTY of GREAT-BRITAIN. in the Year 1682. From a Beautiful High finished Miniature of the same size, in the Possession of T. Manson.' Inscribed in pencil, lower left, '1682'. Muhammed ibn Haddu was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1682. His presence in London was noted in John Evelyn's Diary.
