Wollaston wears a black single-breasted jacket with gold buttons over grey breeches and a white shirt and tie, with black boots with tassels. Wollaston holds a pair of spectacles hinged on a case in his right hand and a sheet of paper in the right, which has a ring on the ring finger. There are books and papers by the side of the chair, to the right as viewed, and additional papers and two inkwells on a table to the left and behind the sitter.
