On September 18th 1922 the mansion and park of 917 acres was conveyed to the people of Leeds. The walled garden was leased as a zoo, a new road and tramway built from Halton and golf courses laid. On October 19th 1923 the house opened to visitors and on the first day there were 20,000 visitors.
