St Michael and Engracia, c1489-c1513

Juan de la Abadia the Younger

St Michael the Archangel stands on the devil. In his right hand he holds the scales which weigh the souls of men. On the left is St Engracia (Encratis or Encratide), a Portuguese virgin martyred in 304 at Saragossa, Spain during the persecution of Christians by the Emperor Diocletian (284-313). In one hand she holds a martyr's palm and from her head a nail protrudes.
