Sunken cliff near Folkestone Harbour

John Lyon

Plate 4 from the paper 'An account of a subsidence of the ground near Folkestone, on the coast of Kent, In a letter from the Rev. John Lyon, M.A. to Edward King...with remarks' by Edward King and John Lyon, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol.76 (1786), pp.220-228. Landscape showing a cliff near Folkestone Church which has subsided, creating a fissure and raising up ground near to the beach. Part of the town and harbour of Folkestone is visible in the distance, with sailing vessels at sea and at anchor. Edward King FRS (1734/5-1807) noted in his covering letter that the artist was 'the reverend Mr Lyon of Dover; who has made repeated visits to the place...and has...sent to me a very accurate drawing'. John Lyon stated 'That you may have a clearer idea of the place where the ground is sinking, I have annexed a drawing of it, taken from a small hill near the foot of the cliff.' Inscribed in ink with letters to a key explaining the scene. Not signed.

Original: ink and watercolour on paper. 1785
