The End of the Season
'The End of the Season', 1871. Prime Minister Gladstone is portrayed as the matronly Britannia's butler. The current session of Parliament had come to an end, and ministers were off to enjoy a long summer recess. However, the session had not enjoyed much success and many matters, including the Licensing Bill and the problem with Russia over their claim on the Black Sea, remained unresolved. Britannia is not impressed. From Punch, or the London Charivari, August 26, 1871.
