'The Old Real Reformer', 1859. There was No Stopping the Slave-trade until I made it Felony, and so it will be with Election Bribery. Lord Brougham, seen here on the right, made a speech in Bradford on the subject of the continuing practice of bribing voters and supporters at parliamentary elections. Claiming that nothing had been done to stop the slave-trade until he made it a crime, he proposed that it should also be made a criminal offence to bribe voters. This cartoon shows Lord Brougham, rather in the manner of a policeman, placing a heavy hand on the shoulder of a candidate who is giving a 'back-hander' to a prospective supporter. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 22, 1859.
