'The Variegated Lizard'
Zoological study of the Lace Monitor (Varanus varius) a lizard native to Australia, shown in a landscape that includes a water-lily. Plate 38 from Journal of a voyage to New South Wales...by John White (J.Debrett, London, 1790). The accompanying text states that: "This Lizard approaches so extremely near to the Lacerta Monitor of Linnaeus, or Monitory Lizard, as to make it doubtful whether it be not in reality a variety of that species..." The plate is inscribed: "S.Stone delin. The Variegated Lizard. Published as the Act directs Dec: 29, 1789, by J.Debrett."
Original: copperplate engraving. 1790
