'Coccothraustes rubra', the red bird, 'Nux juglans alba virginiensis', the hiccory tree, and 'Nux juglans carolinensis fructu minimo putamine levi', the pignut (Catesby's identifications; modern scientific names: Cardinalis cardinalis, the northern cardinal; Carya tomentosa, the mockernut hickory; Carya glabra, the pignut hickory). Plate 38 from volume I of The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands by Mark Catesby (London, 1731). Mark Catesby was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733.
